When Erin from Lemons Lavender & Laundry started talking about putting together a $100 Room challenge for January, I immediately started thinking that our laundry room could use a little sprucing up. Erin does this challenge almost every month, and I every time I look at her rooms and spaces, I can’t get over just how far $100 goes towards making those spaces work and look better. I knew I could make a $100 go a long way towards improving our laundry room’s function, and make it a little prettier to look at, and to work in.
Our laundry room is always the last space in our houses to get any kind of love from me, even though I am always pinning new ideas to my Laundry Room board. Though I painted it and changed the floors when we moved in, I really haven’t done much else to it. This is what it looked like when we bought the house in the summer of 2015.
… and after we painted it Mindful Gray (Sherwin Williams)
This is the current state of the laundry room. It’s constantly a mess, because although there are plenty of cabinets, there is no space to fold laundry. The little counter top we do have is home to the cat food. Add to that the fact that the room is really narrow, and messy becomes kinda dangerous because you have to navigate past laundry baskets, vacuums and such to get to the dryer or into the garage.
The laundry room is right off the kitchen, so we are constantly in and out of it all day. The door is always open, so I am always looking at that mess. It’s not a pretty sight. The litter box is in that little closet, off to the right. While the existing cabinets are large, they are kind of old and dated looking. I don’t really want to have to replace them though, so I plan on just painting the base cabinets and changing the hardware. See the footboard on the right? We’ve been using it since we moved in to keep the dogs out of the kitty litter. I have planned on repurposing it so that it fits the space, but I haven’t gotten to it yet.
So, let’s get to the plan:
- Shorten the footboard to fit the closet width.
- Paint the lower cabinets and change the hardware
- Add a shelf to the back wall to use for folding table and add space for laundry baskets.
- Repaint or decorative stencil
For an idea of what I’m thinking the finished area will look like, here are a couple of my favorite laundry room ideas. Click the pics to go to the original posts please!
Love that shelf – it would be the perfect solution for my lack of a folding table, and a great space for the laundry baskets.
We need a barrier in front of the litter box because my dogs think the litter box is full of treats for them. Ewww… Either I’m cutting down the footboard (finally!) or buying something like that.
And finally, I am so in love with this stencil, and I’m thinking that it would be perfect for the laundry room. Not sure if I’d do black and white, or try pink, but it will be spectacular and fun.
So, that’s my plan. Come back next week to check out my progress… Wish me luck!

Sounds like a great plan. We keep our washing machines in the bathroom in Greece. But a laundry room is a must when we build our own dream home! Never gonna happen, but i love dreaming!

Laundry rooms can be so tricky because of all the different jobs they have to do. Yours is going to be great when you’re done, can’t wait to see!

Hi Eliesa,
You have some great ideas and I’m excited to see the finished room. Our laundry room is right off the kitchen and you are so right about it being the last thing everyone fixes up. Ours really needs to be re-done. Maybe I’ll do it next time. 🙂

One thing to consider – find a small cupboard or end table that has a door on the from and fits your cats box inside. Cut a hole in the side so the cat can get in an out. We did this and it has been a great help!

I’m thinking the folding shelf is going to make a huge difference when you are doing laundry (not to mention inspire me to make one for my laundry room one day ;-D That floor is beautiful and timeless and 3 cheers for flamingos!! Looking forward to watching this room progress. I think you have a great plan in mind!!

I love Sharon’s laundry room, so it’s fun to see that as one of your inspiration photos. I think you can definitely improve the look and organization of that space for <$100 so it won't be such a bummer to look at when you're in the kitchen. And why do dogs like to do gross things? Sigh! 🙂

Your narrow laundry room reminds me of mine, which I’m also working on for this fun challenge. I can’t wait to see how yours turns out, especially your shelf idea. I need something like that too! That stencil is so fun!
