An Olympics Themed Birthday Party
My son’s birthday is in August, so his birthday party always happens about two weeks after school starts. He will be going to middle school next year, one that none of his friends will be attending, we decided to have his party early this year. In honor of the Summer Olympics in London this year, we settled on an Olympic Games birthday party theme.
So, we sent out the invites…
And on Saturday, I got my son and his friend to paint the sign to welcome the Competitors to the Games.
We put out the sign they made, and the flags I made earlier this week.
Then we put up signs for each of the sports they would be playing.
The kids showed up and about five minutes later, the skies opened up and poured. We thought all was lost, well in terms of the games anyway. So we improvised and got the kids started with Ping Pong – did you know it’s an Olympic sport? I didn’t, but I was glad to find out it was! Thankfully, the rain stopped after about twenty minutes and the kids went directly into the pool. They stayed there until we made them get out to play the games.
Getting ready for the 40 yard dash…
After they ran that race, I couldn’t keep score and take pics, so that’s all the pics I have of the games. Sorry.
For the cake, I found this one a while back on Pinterest.
I usually link my pictures back to the original pin or website, but this one turned out to be spam. I couldn’t find any more of the same pin, so I apologize for not having it for you. Either way, it looked pretty easy to replicate, so I did.
I followed the directions for the white box cake, using butter instead of oil and just added gel food coloring to make an ordinary cake a lot more fun. How cool does this look?
I am not an artist, by any stretch of the imagination, so I decorated it very simply with M&M’s.
I loved how beautifully the colors looked once we cut into it.
After the cake was cut, the kids made ice cream sundaes, went back in the pool, and ended up watching movies and eating popcorn till late in the night. It was a really good day – even if we did forget to have a closing ceremony and give out the medals 🙂
Hope you had a great weekend!

Thanks! I think the kids had a great time. It’s so hard to come up with a party theme for an 11 year old boy that doesn’t seem cheesy, or boring (my least favorite word).
