There isn’t much that we still need for the house, in terms of furniture. However, I keep trying to find interesting pieces to make the house feel more like a home. In the last few trips to my favorite thrift store, I’ve found a few things I think are fun. Want to see?
This bull I found for $2 – I know it wasn’t hideous before, but we don’t have a lot of gold/brassy accessories in the house. So, I used some Rustoleum Hammered Primer and paint in one to take it from gold to black, with a little bit of texture, instead of a flat black.
And then today I found these little frames for $0.50 a piece. I know they look a little dated right now, but I plan on changing that soon enough. I do kind of think that the artwork is kind of adorable in such small scale.
Sometimes I find things that seem destined to be mine… like this heavy brass “P”. It was in a bin with a bunch of other junk, no other letters except this one. It just so happens that our last name starts with “P” so it was like it was serendipity for me to find it 🙂
And I seem to have a problem with chair hoarding. I found these for $2 a piece and I couldn’t pass them up.
I love that this one folds up. I am going to paint it and change the fabric on the cushion, but it should be an easy transformation.
When I first saw this, I didn’t realize that it was wrought iron, but when I picked it up, I was surprised at how heavy and solid it was. It needs to be sanded down and repainted, but the cushion is in good condition so I don’t need to recover it right away.
This glass lamp needs a good cleaning, and re-painting of the brass/gold, and I’ll probably fill it with our shell collection that I haven’t been able to find a home for. For $1.50, I won’t feel too horrible if it doesn’t turn out exactly like the Pottery Barn ones I’ve seen for $150 each.
I also found a really cool metal/iron headboard, but it’s still in the back of my car. Shhh… don’t tell my husband. We don’t have any place to put a queen size bed right now, but for $19, I figured that it wouldn’t take up a lot of space in the garage until we have a place for it. 🙂
So, have you found anything interesting while thrifting lately?
BTW, are you watching Downton Abbey? I just started watching it because of all the posts on Facebook about it. I have to admit that I kind of love it. How about you?

Those are great finds! Do you have any tips for finding thrift stores? I live in St.Louis and just don’t know how to figure out what “good” places are near me. Goodwill tends to be a bit pricey in my opinion. Thanks for any help.

Hi Rachel! I have gone to quite a few thrift stores around here, and I am always surprised at how different their prices are from each other. For example, at some I can find silver plated pitchers for $2 a piece, and the same piece would sell for $15-20 a piece at other thrift stores. I love Faith Farm, which is close to where I live, but I agree with you about our local Goodwills – they too are overpriced. You just have to visit your local stores – and visit them a few times, not just once (unless their prices are astronomical). Since we live in Florida, it’s very seasonal (cheaper in the summer, prices rise in the winter), so prices could vary where you are too. Also, some places are great for things like furniture, while others are better for knick-knacks and such. Usually, I don’t find one store that has it all. Oh, and if it’s a little shop, make friends with the owner. They will let you know about sales, or keep an eye out for specific pieces you are looking for. Sorry I can’t be more specific about it, but that’s how I’ve found my favorite stores.

Odds are that we will eventually run into each other at one of the thrift stores. Nice finds.

I hope so, Frank! It’s been way too long.

I love you are hiding a headboard in the back of your car! I always have something back there that hasn’t made it into the house. Great finds.

I haven’t been to any thrift stores in a while. I started going to these little country auctions out here in New England to get stuff. You can literally get boxes full of anything and everything imaginable from various estate clean-outs for $5-10. Furniture goes for really cheap because very few people want to haul it away. It’s where almost all of the antique dealers and eBay sellers get their items. I know they have them down south too. Just be careful; they are highly addictive!

That sounds like fun, actually! Where I am, I don’t know about auctions like that. The one I went to was a mad house of crazy (prices were insane, and also the people were a little, a lot, nutty) and I haven’t tried another since. I will have to look it up to see if they have something similar, because that would make my day!

Oh my gosh!! I wish you lived next door!! And I wish I still lived in West Palm so I could visit Faith Farm, the absolutely best thrift store EVER! If only I could shop Faith Farm online I’d gladly pay the shipping. Anyway, you’re so very creative and I’m not so you need to be on my “Friends” list.
Thanks for a zillion great ideas………………
